翻译的高手,妙手,快手都必须是矢志不移,勤学苦练的能手。灵感和悟性的火花是高强度的思维活动之中迸发出来的。语言是文化的载体。英语习语深深扎根于各自坚实的文化土壤之中,折射出英汉文化差异。采撷一些有代表性的习语进行对比研究,其乐无穷。

 

1.   英汉习语词序截然相反。

Back and forth——前前后后

Iron and steel——钢铁

Rain or shine——不论晴雨

Ebb and flow——涨落,盛衰

Written in black and white——白纸黑字

Go through fire and water——赴汤蹈火

Suffer from cold and hunger——饥寒交迫

By twos and threes——三三两两


 

2.   英语习语里的数词往往比汉语小
 
In threes and fours——三五成群
 
In one or two words——三言两语
 
At sixes and sevens——乱七八糟
 
In two minds——三心二意
 
Two heads are better than one——三个臭皮匠赛过诸葛亮
 
 
但是也有少数习语里的数词比汉语大。如:
 
One in a thousand——百里挑一
 
Two tons of mistakes——错误百出
 
Thanks a million——万分感谢
 
At seven-league strides—— 一日千里



3.   部分英汉日常生活习语虽以不同名词为喻体,但喻义基本相同。

Spend money like water——挥金如土

A land of butter and honey——鱼米之乡

Make bricks without straw——无米之炊

Spring up like mushrooms——雨后春笋

As weak as water——骨瘦如柴

The scalded dog fears old water——一朝遭蛇咬,十年怕井绳

The cat shuts its eyes when stealing creams——掩耳盗铃
 

4.   不少英汉习语虽以不同人物名称为喻体,但喻义基本相同。

As merry as David——快活如神仙

Jack-of-all-trades——万能博士

Tom, Dick or Harry——张三李四

Teach one's grandmother to suck eggs——班门弄斧

Talk of the devil, and he is sure to appear——说曹操曹操到


 

5.   英汉习语里虽然有不少以不同的动物为喻体或本体,但喻义基本对应。

Black sheep——害群之马

As strong as horse——虎背熊腰

As mad as a March hare——疯狂如狗

Sell horse-meat as beef-steak——挂羊头卖狗肉

Kill the goose that lays the golden eggs——杀鸡取卵

Dog does not eat dog——虎毒不食子

Love me,love my dog——爱屋及乌

Shed crocodile tears——猫哭老鼠

Set a fox to keep one's geese——引狼入室

Cast pearls before swine——对牛弹琴

Like a drown rat——像只落汤鸡

Neither fish nor flesh——非驴非马

Lock stable door after the horse is stolen——亡羊补牢

When the cats are away, the mice will play——山中无老虎,猴子称霸王

Be better the head of a dog(ass) than the tail of a lion(horse)——宁为鸡首,毋为牛后


 

6.   有些英语习语借人代物,表达含蓄而生动;而汉语则多以物指物

Yellow boy——金币

The inner man——胃

Dead men——空酒瓶

Maid of honor——柠檬杏仁酪饼

Uncle Sam——美国,美国政府

Long Tom——长射程大炮

The old woman is plucking her geese——下雪了


 

7.   英语习语常借动物喻人,而汉语则以人指人。

As poor as a  church mouse——穷光蛋;穷如瘪三

Cold fish——怪人

A dog in the manger——占着茅坑不拉屎

A wet hen——泼妇

Old bird——精明鬼,老家伙

Eager beaver——做事特别卖力的人

The Swan of Avon——莎士比亚

The sheep and the goats——好人与坏人
